Blood in Vomiting

Vomiting blood, medically known as hematemesis, is a serious gastrointestinal symptom that should be evaluated promptly. The presence of blood in vomit may appear as bright red blood or resemble coffee grounds if the blood has been partially digested. This symptom may indicate bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, or the first part of the small intestine (duodenum).

Common causes of blood in vomit include:

  • Gastric ulcers or peptic ulcers
  • Esophageal varices (often due to liver cirrhosis)
  • Gastritis or stomach inflammation
  • Mallory-Weiss tears (esophageal tears from forceful vomiting)
  • Swallowing blood from nosebleeds or oral injuries
  • Cancer of the stomach or esophagus

Patients may also experience accompanying symptoms such as abdominal pain, dizziness, black or tarry stools (melena), low blood pressure, fainting, or signs of shock in severe cases.

At Dr. Abhishek Jain’s Gastroenterology Clinic in Raipur, we offer comprehensive diagnosis and emergency care for hematemesis. Our approach includes a thorough clinical examination, blood investigations, and urgent upper GI endoscopy to identify the bleeding source and determine the severity.

Hematemesis is a medical emergency. Delaying diagnosis and treatment can lead to serious complications like anemia, shock, or death, especially in cases involving variceal bleeding or malignancies.

Treatment varies based on the cause — options include medications to reduce stomach acid, endoscopic procedures to stop bleeding, or surgery in rare cases. Supportive care such as fluid resuscitation and blood transfusions may also be required.

If you or a loved one experiences vomiting with blood, seek medical help immediately.
