Abdomen Pain
Jaundice is a condition marked by the yellowing of the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes due to an increased level of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment formed during the breakdown of red blood cells and is normally processed by the liver and excreted in the bile. When this process is disrupted, bilirubin accumulates in the body, leading to jaundice.
Jaundice is not a disease in itself but a symptom of underlying liver, bile duct, or blood-related disorders. Common causes include viral hepatitis (A, B, C), alcoholic liver disease, fatty liver, obstructive jaundice due to gallstones, liver cirrhosis, and liver or pancreatic cancers. In some cases, hemolytic anemia or inherited liver conditions can also be responsible.
Symptoms of jaundice may include:
- Yellow discoloration of the eyes and skin
- Dark-colored urine
- Pale stools
- Fatigue and weakness
- Itching (pruritus)
- Abdominal pain or swelling
At Dr. Abhishek Jain’s Gastroenterology Clinic, we emphasize accurate diagnosis and timely intervention. Our comprehensive evaluation includes liver function tests (LFTs), imaging studies like ultrasound and CT scan, viral markers, and if needed, liver biopsy or endoscopic procedures.
Treatment of jaundice depends on its cause. For example, viral hepatitis is treated with supportive care and antiviral medications, while obstructive jaundice may require procedures like ERCP to remove bile duct blockages.
Ignoring jaundice can lead to severe liver damage and complications.
